Prince George kicks a ball and plays with toy car at charity polo match

The relaxed afternoon was a world away from the pomp and pageantry of Saturday, when the young prince watched the Trooping of the Colour for the first time.

Clutching his toy car and playing happily in the grass, Prince George was the centre of attention at a family outing to the polo yesterday.

The young prince, who turns two next month, spent a relaxed afternoon with his mother on the sidelines of a charity match in Tetbury, Gloucestershire.

It was a world away from the pomp and pageantry of Saturday, when the prince watched the Trooping of the Colour for the first time, and appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch the Red Arrows.

Although he was there to watch his father play in the match, it appeared George was rather more engrossed in his toys, including a red and black toy car.

He did, though, try his hand with a miniature polo mallet, and took a self-assured kick at a ball as his mother watched on.

There was no sign of six-week-old Princess Charlotte, which left the Duchess free to chat to Zara Phillips and her husband Mike Tindall, who were with their daughter Mia Grace, as well as Peter and Autumn Phillips with their children, Savannah, six, and Isla, three.

Wearing blue jeans, a stripy Breton top and sunglasses, the Duchess of Cambridge had to help her son as he struggled to crawl his way up a daunting hill.

She then had to offer a restraining arm as the young prince turned around and tried to hurtle his way to the bottom, sliding on the slippery grass.

Later, after the match, the Duke joined his wife and son, who appeared tired out after a hard day's play.

Prince Harry joined his brother the Duke of Cambridge in the competition at Beautfort Polo Club, where the pair have battled it out on the field for years.

Tickets for the festival cost only £10, while guests including Prince Charles enjoyed polo demonstrations and more than 40 exhibitors in a tented village.

The Duke is still enjoying paternity leave before he starts his new job as an air ambulance pilot in Norfolk, where he and his family will soon be based.

Tim Keyte, executive polo manager of the nearby Cirencester Polo Park, said: “William is so much like his father in the way he plays. I played with his father quite a bit in the early days.

“Harry has got his own style. He's more of a fighter, someone who gets in there and gets his hands dirty."

The Queen was also watching polo yesterday, dressed in pale pink, to present The Cartier Queen's Cup at Windsor Great Park, Berkshire.

The night before, the monarch had been joined for an 89th birthday celebration by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their first night out together since the birth of Princess Charlotte.

Held in a private dining room at the exclusive Berry Brothers & Rudd club in Kensington, the evening began just after 8pm and continued until nearly 11pm.

Guests included Princess Anne’s children Peter and Zara, and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

Afterwards, Prince Harry, Beatrice and Eugenie headed out to the launch of new London nightclub, while the Duke of Duchess of Cambridge took the sensible option and headed home.
