网信办对新浪微博、百度及腾讯作出行政处罚
China's cyber watchdogs have handed down penalties to several of the country's top tech firms for failing to properly manage online content. Notices posted by Beijing municipal cyberspace administration and Guangdong provincial cyberspace administration said the firms, Tencent, Baidu and Sina Weibo, were fined for failing to remove fake news and obscene information as well as content that "incites ethnic hatred" and "threatens social order". Tencent and Sina Weibo received the maximum penalty. It is the first time the administration has levied maximum fines against tech firms under the new cyber security law introduced in June. "The internet does not operate outside of the law. The cyberspace authorities will seriously implement the new cyber security law and other regulations to increase territorial supervision and enforcement efforts regarding the internet," Guangdong provincial cyberspace administration said. The notices did not detail the exact sum of the penalties, but under the new cyber security law, individuals in charge of platforms and others directly involved face a maximum penalty of 100,000 yuan each. |
