Barack Obama swept to victory as the first black president in the US history Tuesday night in an electoral college landslide that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself.

这里用到的sweep 这个词表示“赢得完全胜利/压倒性的胜利to win a complete or overwhelming victory in (a contest)”,比如:Johnson swept the presidential election of 1964.

Sweep 还可以表示“赢得(比赛或竞赛)每一阶段的胜利to win (every game, round, hand, etc., of a series of contests)”,比如:The Yankees swept the three-game series.

Obama won a landslide victory with 349 electoral votes while McCain only got 162 votes. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win the White House. US President Bush called Obama to congratulate him on his victory shortly after McCain conceded defeat.

According to US media projections, Democrat Barack Obama has scored a landslide victory in the marathon presidential race to be elected as the first African-American US president.

当然我们也可以说“Obama won the presidential election with a landslide victory.”
