[In 2011], many shoppers chose to avoid (the frantic1) crowds and do their holiday shopping [from the comfort of their computer]. Sales (at online retailers2) gained [by more than 15%], [making it the biggest season3 ever]. But people are [also] returning those purchases [at record rates4 ], [up 8%] [from last year]. Keeping such a frantic pace only leaves you exhausted and not of much use to the people depending on you. Then they saw the frantic swimming, the cries for help that echoed across the bay. [选自:BBC: Norway attacks: The agony of the rescue] 2. retailer n. Furniture and carpet retailers are among those reporting the sharpest annual decline in sales. The plum season is about to begin. Season the meat with salt and pepper. Care homes and beds are being lost at record rates. [选自:BBC: NEWS | Health | Bill for elderly care could soar] What went [wrong]? Is the lingering1 shadow (of the global financial crisis) making it ? Or that people shop [more] [impulsively3] – ^and therefore make bad decisions^ – [when online]? Both arguments are plausible 4. [However], there is a third factor: {a question of touch}. We can love the look but, ^in an online environment^, we cannot feel the quality (of a texture 5), the shape (of the fit), the fall (of a fold) or, [for that matter], the weight (of an earring). And physically interacting 6 [with an object] makes you . The beautiful music is still lingering in my ears. He was ashamed. That feeling lingered, and he was never comfortable in church after that. In short, Internet Explorer 5 offers terrific new tools as well as some lingering annoyances. [选自:CNN: Internet Explorer 5: Looks the same, works better] Time really flies, Microsoft has launched its IE 11 so far. 2. indulgence n. Is self forgiveness just another form of self indulgence? Don't respond immediately or impulsively. Doing so can make matters worse. He can be very emotional, act impulsively. [选自:MSN: Ex-U.N. envoy: Karzai may have drug problem] 4. plausible adj. A more plausible explanation would seem to be that people are fed up with the administration. Many GOP insiders see him as the most plausible nominee and Obama's strongest potential challenger. Grand Old Party][选自:NPR: AP-GfK Poll: Public Unsettled On Obama Challenger] 5. texture n. It is used in moisturizers to give them a wonderfully silky texture. Sometimes, she picks woods that have some texture, so that scratches won't be as visible. [选自:WSJ: Stylish and Pet-Friendly Décor] 6. interacting n. Caregivers in the baby and toddler room should be on the floor interacting with the babies. The two interacting galaxies are separated from each other by tens of thousands of light-years. [选自:MSN: When Galaxies Meet: Hubble Telescope Snaps Photo for 21st Birthday – Tech] [When my most recent book {Brandwashed} was released1,] I teamed up [with2 a local bookstore] [to conduct an experiment about the difference] (between the online and offline shopping experience). I [carefully] instructed a group of volunteers [to promote my book in two different ways]. The first was a fairly hands-off 3 approach. [Whenever a customer would inquire about my book,] the volunteer would take them [over to the shelf] and point to it. [Out of 20 such requests], six customers proceeded4 with the purchase. He is releasing an album of love songs. He was released from custody the next day. We released that fish. [应时注:This sentence was spoken by a beautiful American girl that I met when I was swimming in the sea in Lamma Island in Hong Kong. At that day, I caught a small fish, and I gave it as a gift to this girl. And a few minutes later, when I saw her empty hands, she explained to me with this sentence. 2. team up with 与… 协作。例: To put this hypothesis to the test, I teamed upwith my colleagues – the psychologists George Newman and Paul Bloom. Maybe it could team up with Facebook for this one and make something social and awesome. [选自:CNN: Why Xbox Kinect could be -- but won't be -- the future of TV] 3. hands-off adj. The point is that this time, unlike in the 1930s, the government didn’t take a hands-off attitude while much of the banking system collapsed. 4. proceed vi. The group proceeded with a march they knew would lead to bloodshed. The US Supreme Court was also considering whether to allow Reynolds' execution to proceed. [选自:BBC: Ohio governor delays executions] The second option [also] involved going over to the shelf but, [this time], removing the book and them [subtly1] holding onto it [for just an extra moment] [before placing it in the customer’s hands]. [Of the 20 people (who were handed the book],) 13 ended up buying it. [Just] physically passing the book showed a big difference [in sales]. Why? We feel something [similar to a sense] (of ownership) [when we hold things [in our hand].] That’s why we establish or reestablish2 connection [by greeting strangers and friends with a handshake]. [In this case], having to then let go of the book after holding it might generate a subtle3 sense (of loss), and motivate us [even more]. There are factors that subtly influence the sex of an offspring. The study used pictures of male and female faces which had been subtly digitally manipulated. [选自:BBC: The best look to make yourself attractive] 2. reestablish vt. Don't get discouraged if it takes that long to reestablish your professional identity, or create a new one, even if you're doing everything right. The bank hopes eventually to reestablish the relationship, but that now appears unlikely. [选自:CNN: ASIANOW - TIME Asia | TIME Finance: Help Wanted?] 3. subtle adj. This change is rather subtle, but it has some important implications. But there's a subtle tension embedded in the drawings he did on his own time. [选自:WSJ: Ilya Kabakov's Art at New York's Edelman Arts Gallery] A recent study [also] revealed the power (of touch), [in this case] [when it came to conventional mail.] A deeper and longer-lasting1impression (of a message) was formed [when delivered [in a letter],] [as opposed to2 receiving the same message online]. Brain imaging showed that, [on touching the paper], the emotional center (of the brain) was activated3, [thus] [forming a stronger bond4]. The study [also] indicated that [once touch becomes part of the process,] it could translate into a sense (of possession). But it will take much stronger and longer-lasting multilateral assistance to help these people shift from being victims to becoming the principal agents of recovery. 2. as opposed to 与… Shedding emotional tears, as opposed to tears caused by physical pain, is thought to be a uniquely human ability, the purpose of which is unknown. Too much time is spent on team play as opposed to making the individuals better players. [选自:BBC: Twentyman Talks Back] 3. activate v. In order to do this you need to ensure the server view is activated. Video cameras with night vision can be activated by movement. 4. bond n. The experience created a very special bond between us. They all bonded while writing graffiti together. Updyke, who spent a night in jail after his arrest, is free on bond. [选自:MSN: Cops: Auburn tree poisoning suspect attacked] This sense (of ownership) is [simply] [not] part (of the equation1 ) [in the online shopping experience]. But in terms of the impact on human society, threat is only part of the equation. [选自:BBC: Coral reefs heading for fishing and climate crisis] |
