如何用英语表达你的“尴尬症”?
最近很多朋友和英大抱怨自己遇到很尴尬的处境,例如:吃饭没带钱,老板在训人自己没忍住偷笑,或者是把小抄传到监考员手中。真的大麻烦,好尴尬啊!今天英大就教教大家除了awkward 以外还可以用那些方法来表达尴尬。 1.be in a devil of a hole [俚]处境非常尴尬 devil hole 直译就是“魔鬼洞”,形容自身处境非常艰难尴尬,就像是深入魔鬼的洞穴,英大想想都觉得可怕 e.g. Joe is in a devil of a hole. 乔现在处境非常尴尬。 e.g. It put me in a devil hole of having to lie. 这令我陷入了不得不说谎的尴尬境地。
2.a trying situation 难处境况,尴尬处境 “trying situation”除了可以形容严峻困窘意外,还有“不要意思的局面”,“令人伤脑筋的局面” e.g. That is a trying situation. 那是一个不好意思的局面。 e.g. It was a trying situation. 这是一个让人伤脑筋的局面。 e.g.The public finance of China is now in a trying situation. 我国财政正处于严峻的困窘境地。
3.“hot”也可以用来表示你的尴尬①make it hot for him 使之对他有害的,让你不好过。 e.g. The police say they'll make it really hot for Barry if they catch him a second time driving his car without tax. 警方说,如果他们第二次抓住马里没有交纳牌照税,他们将会让他不好过的。 ②in the hot seat 处于尴尬的处境,如坐针毡。 e.g.On the business front, IT executives are frequently in the hot seat when it comes to justifying their budgets. 在业务上,当涉及到说明自己预算合理性时,IT执行人员往往处于尴尬的位置。 P.S. “hot seat”也有身负重任,挑大梁的意思。 e.g.He is to remain in the hot seat as chief executive. 他将继续留在公司首席行政官这个身负重任的位子上。 e.g.You make the decisions - you're in the hot seat now! 你得做决定,这现在是你的责任了。 ③in hot water 在热水里?它的意思并不是“在热水中”,它的确切意思是指某人或某些人遇到非常麻烦的问题了,表现得尴尬焦躁不安。 e.g.He was found cheating on the exam, and now he's in hot water. 他考试作弊被发现了,现在他可麻烦了。 e.g. I'm sorry I can't lend you money. I myself am in hot water. 抱歉,没钱借给你了,我现在也是麻烦缠身呢。 e.g. John lost his credit card and he was in hot water. 约翰丢失了他的信用卡,现在他如坐针毡。
4.Facepalm 捂脸 A facepalm is the physical gesture of placing one's hand flat across one's face or lowering one's face into one's hand or hands. 捂脸,指的是用手捂住脸或将脸埋进手掌的动作。 这个动作多用来表达沮丧或者尴尬,或者是“你怎么这么傻愣”,“你高兴就好”以及“天下我只服你一人”等情况。
5.awkward adj. 尴尬的;笨拙的;棘手的;不合适的 对于常看英美剧的宝宝们来说,这个词一定不陌生。 在MTV台播放由莫莉•塔洛芙饰演的Awkward,就被翻译成《囧女珍娜》。所以,“囧”就可以用awkard了。 e.g. There was an awkwardly long silence. 有一段令人尴尬的长时间的沉默。 (英大朋友:就怕空气突然安静了。就是这个意思了。) e.g. The president laughed off the awkward situation. 总统对尴尬的处境一笑置之。
6.embarrassed adj. 尴尬的;窘迫的 e.g. She smiles at him and says, "I'm sorry if I embarrassed you. 她笑着对他说:“如果我让你感到尴尬了,对不起。 e.g. Are you embarrassed for me? 你为我感到难堪吗?
7.discomfiture n. 狼狈;挫败,崩溃 e.g.People laugh not only from pleasure or affection, but also at the discomfiture of someone else. 人们不仅因为愉悦和喜爱而笑,也会在他人造成挫折或尴尬的局面时而笑。 e.g.He was really not masterful enough mentally, and he had witnessed her discomfiture. 他的确在精神上不够老练,况且他亲眼见到了她的狼狈情况。 |
