《摩登家庭》S2E23：我们都在努力证明自己

Alex今天要作为毕业生代表在初中毕业典礼上讲话，一大家子人经历了惊心动魄的一天。

1. knock/throw sb for a loop

knock/throw sb for a loop这里的意思是使人心烦，也有“使大为惊讶”的意思。

He knocked me for a loop when he said he was quitting his job.

他说他要辞职的时候吓了我一跳。

pick up the pieces的意思是“重整旗鼓；力求恢复正常”，这里的收拾烂摊子倒是很对应pieces，有种很混乱的感觉。

The fire was a blow, but we were determined to pick up the pieces and get the business back on itsfeet.

火灾是个打击，但我们决心重整旗鼓，恢复经营。

pick up也有接、取的意思，比如顺带去某物就可以用pick up：

When you're in town could you pick up the books I ordered?

你进城时能帮我取一下我订购的书吗？

2. bounce off 

bounce的动词本意是弹起；（使）跳跃，也有征求别人的看法的意思。

bounce sth off sb的完整意思就是“试探…对…的看法”。

Can I bounce a couple of ideas off you?

我可以跟你交流几个想法吗？

补充bounce的两个实用表达：

bounce back 恢复；恢复元气；重振旗鼓

bounce sb into sth （通常指在政治上）迫使…做（不愿做的事）

3. rule out

rule out表示“ 不考虑；排除”，更书面一点的意思就是“使…不可能发生；防止”。

A serious car accident in 1986 ruled out a permanent future for him in farming.

1986年的一起严重车祸使他永远无法务农了。

4. figure out

这里的insecurity形容的是一种不安全感，是一种不安的状态。

演讲中Alex想表达的意思是是，我们都有着自己的难言之隐，而我们也在努力地改变自己，去证明自己。

figure out主要有这两个意思：

①计算出

We need to work out the total cost of the project.

我们需要算出这项工程的总造价。

②理解；想出

There will be a full investigation to work out what caused the accident.

将进行全面的调查以找出事故发生的原因。
