[00:11.03]It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live. [00:17.46]Making Sandcastles堆沙堡 [00:25.46]A little boy is on his knees [00:28.87]scooping and packing the sand with plastic shovels into a bright blue bucket. [00:34.23]Then he upends the bucket on the surface and lifts it. [00:38.42]And, to the delight of the little architect, a castle tower is created. [00:43.88]All afternoon he will work,scooping out the moat and packing the walls. [00:49.58]Bottle tops will be sentries. Sticks will be bridges. A sandcastle will be built. [00:56.61]Big city. Busy streets. Rumbling traffic. [01:01.30]A man is in his office. At his desk he puts papers into stacks and assigns tasks. [01:08.54]The phone is on his shoulder and he is knocking the keyboard with his fingers. [01:13.34]Contracts are signed and much to the delight of the man, a profit is made. [01:19.17]All his life he will work,formulating the plans, forecasting the future. [01:24.85]Profits will be sentries. Capital gains will be bridges. An empire will be built. [01:31.65]Two builders of two castles. They have much in common. [01:36.37]They shape little pebbles into grand buildings. They are diligent and determined. [01:42.38]And for both the tide will rise and the end will come. [01:46.67]Yet that is where the similarities stop. [01:49.95]For the boy sees the end while the man ignores it. [01:54.45]Watch the boy as the dusk approaches. [01:57.07]As the waves near, the wise child jumps to his feet and begins to clap. [02:02.54]There is no sorrow. No fear. No regret. He knew this would happen. [02:08.79]He is not surprised. [02:10.43]And when the great breaker crashes into his castle [02:13.93]and his masterpiece is sucked into the sea, he smiles. [02:18.23]He smiles, picks up his tools, takes his father’s hand, and goes home. [02:24.23]The grownup, however, is not so wise. [02:28.30]As the wave of years collapses on his castle he is terrified. [02:33.21]He tries to protect the sandy monument. He blocks the waves from the walls he has made. [02:40.01]Salt-water soaked and shivering he snarls at the incoming tide. [02:45.07]"It’s my castle," he protests. [02:47.80]The ocean need not respond. Both know to whom the sand belongs... [02:54.05]I don’t know much about sandcastles. [02:56.34]But children do. Watch them and learn. [02:59.95]Go ahead and build, but build with a child’s heart. [03:03.81]When the sun sets and the tides take——applaud. [03:08.29]Salute the process of life and go home. |
