They are world-class athletes who dominate their respective sports, so it is perhaps of little surprise that Usain Bolt and Cristiano Ronaldo are role models for many men. But it is not just their athletic ability that men want to emulate. A study has revealed that both Bolt and Ronaldo have the body shape most desired by British men. Their torso tapers from the shoulders to the waist, making their physique look like an 'inverted triangle'. It is one of five male body shapes identified by researchers at well-being firm Forza Supplements, who examined the physical characteristics of 2,000 men. They determined all men can be classified as a rectangle, an oval, a triangle, a rhomboid or an inverted triangle. The most common shape is the rectangle, with celebrities including David Beckham and Harry Styles falling within this group. As the name suggests, a rectangle torso is fairly square and flat and there is no tapering at the hips. Some 40 percent of men are rectangles. Oval men make up the second biggest group, with 26 percent falling into this category. Like stars including James Corden and Elton John, ovals carry excess weight evenly across their torso. The explosion in obesity levels suggests that increasing numbers of men will become ovals over the next decade, researchers found.
The two most desirable shapes - the rhomboid and the inverted triangle - are also the least common in Britain. The rhomboid man tends to work out heavily, giving them a solid upper torso that is slightly wider around the ribs than the waist, much like James Bond actor Daniel Craig and male supermodel David Gandy. Just 13 percent of men are rhomboids. The inverted triangle, a shape carefully honed by athletes like Ronaldo and Bolt, is found in just 5 percent of men - perhaps accounting for its desirability. Lee Smith, managing director of Forza Supplements, said: 'Most of us are rectangles like Becks and Harry Styles, but we long to be an inverted triangle like Usain Bolt. 'There is little we can do to alter the basic frame that we are born with but there is lots we can do to improve our body shapes and move from being a Rectangle to a Rhomboid, for instance. 'Daniel Craig is a perfect example of man who has used conditioning and hard work to achieve his ambitions. 'The most striking part of our research was the grown in the number Ovals and Triangles. If the current surge in obesity levels continues at the current rates, Ovals could become British men's most popular body shape over the next 25 years.' |
