[00:12.54]About a week after his death, [00:14.83] she shared some of her thoughts with a classroom of students. [00:18.66] As the late afternoon sunlight shined through the classroom windows, [00:23.14] and when the class was nearly over, [00:25.55]she moved a few things aside on her desk and sat down there. [00:29.49] With a gentle look on her face, [00:32.33]she paused and said, [00:34.30]“Before class is over, [00:36.38] I would like to share with all of you a thought [00:39.78]which I feel is very important. [00:41.97] Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves... [00:50.39] and none of us knows when this fantastic experience will end. [00:54.66] It can be taken away at any moment. [00:58.16] Perhaps this is a sign that we must make the most out of every single day.” [01:04.49] Her eyes beginning to water, [01:06.89] she went on, [01:08.09]“So I would like you all to make me a promise... [01:11.92] from now on, [01:13.12]on your way to school, [01:14.56]or on your way home, [01:15.77]find something beautiful to notice. [01:18.17]It doesn’t have to be something you see [01:21.23]—it could be a scent— [01:23.31]perhaps of freshly baked bread wafting out of someone’s house, [01:27.36] or it could be the sound of the breeze slightly rustling the leaves in the trees, [01:32.29] or the way the morning light catches one autumn leaf as it falls gently to the ground. [01:37.86] Please, look for these things, and remember them. [01:41.58] “For, although it may sound silly to some people, [01:45.62]these things are the “stuff” of life. [01:48.36]The little things we are put here on earth to enjoy. [01:52.08]The things we often take for granted. [01:55.44]We must make it important to notice them, [01:58.29]for at any time ... it can all be taken away.” [02:02.12] The class was completely quiet. [02:04.63]We all picked up our books and filed out of the room silently. [02:08.79] That afternoon, [02:11.09]I noticed more things on my way home from school than I had that whole semester. [02:16.55] Every once in a while, [02:18.53]I think of that teacher and remember what an impression she made on all of us, [02:23.56] and I try to appreciate all of those things that sometimes we all overlook. [02:28.92] Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour today. [02:32.97] Go barefoot. Or walk on the beach at sunset. [02:36.47] Stop off on the way home tonight to get a double dip ice cream cone. [02:41.06]For as we get older, [02:43.25]it is not the things we did that we often regret, [02:45.98] but the things we didn’t do. |
