Beirut blasts kill more than 100 Two huge explosions rocked the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday evening, killing at least 100 people and injuring 4,000 others. The blasts rocked the Port of Beirut at around 6:10 pm local time, shaking buildings all over the city. The number of casualties was expected to rise as the search and counting continued. The causes of the blasts remained unknown, but Lebanese Interior Minister Mohammad Fahmi said that the explosive chemicals stored at the Port of Beirut may have caused the explosions. Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab declared Wednesday a national mourning day for the victims of the explosions. The Higher Defense Council declared Beirut as an afflicted city, while the Lebanese cabinet announced a state of emergency in the city for two weeks. |
