China begins construction of world's highest highway tunnel--Construction of a tunnel that will traverse Trola Mountain in southwestern Sichuan Province began on Wednesday.中国开始建设世界最高公路隧道——将横贯四川省西南部雀儿山的隧道工程周三开工建设。在上面的报道中，highway tunnel就是“公路隧道”，其他常见的隧道还有railway tunnel（铁路隧道）、canal tunnel（运河隧道）、cross-harbour tunnel（海底隧道）等。由于雀儿山隧道是在海拔最高的Sichuan-Tibet Highway（川藏公路）上建设，自然也就成了最高公路隧道。同样海拔高、难度大的还有Qinghai-Tibet Railway（青藏铁路）工程。由于Qinghai-Tibet Plateau（青藏高原）海拔高，所以容易发生altitude sickness（高原反应），再加上frozen earth（冻土）等因素，工程难度可想而知。 |
