This first International Widows' Day is an occasion to call attention to the many "firsts" that women must face when their husbands die. In addition to coping with grief, they may find themselves for the first time since marriage without any social safety net. Far too often, widows lack access to inheritance, land tenure, employment and even the means to survive. 上文中提到了一些妇女在丈夫死亡后会面临的问题,比如:grief(悲痛)、without any social safety net(没有社会安全网)、lack access to inheritance, land tenure(无法继承财产、没有土地保有权)等等。她们可能会面临的其他问题有:poverty(贫困)、bear the heavy burden of caring for their children(承担抚养孩子的重任)、universally recognized rights denied(普遍公认的权利被剥夺)等等。 Widow这个词可以用做动词和名词两种形式,名词形式的用法就是我们这里用到的International Widows' Day或者She is a widow。 Martha was widowed 3 years ago when her husband was killed in a car accident. |
