AWOL 擅离职守

A few hours after President Obama’s press conference Wednesday, Republican House Speaker John Boehner accused him of being “AWOL" – absent without leave – on the debt-reduction debate.

在美国总统奥巴马周三召开新闻发布会后几小时，共和党众议院发言人约翰•博纳就指责他在讨论削减债务问题时擅离职守。

文中的AWOL就是指“擅离职守、无故缺席”，也可以指军队中“无故离队”，全称为absent without leave或者absent without official leave。

UA（Unauthorized Absence）或者absence from duty也可以用来表示“擅自缺勤、擅离职守”。正式获批的休假则是leave of absence/authorized absence（特许缺勤；经批准缺勤）。

英语中有很多诸如AWOL这样的缩写，常见的比如ASAP（as soon as possible）、BTW（by the way）、TGIF（thank God it's Friday）、AFAIK（as far as I know）、FYI （for your information）、IOW（in other words）等等，在日常对话中非常普遍。熟悉了这些缩写，我们也就能更顺畅地和老外交流了。
