“风中之烛”完成于1973年，是艾尔顿强以一个影迷的身分，看待他的偶像：玛丽莲梦露绚烂而悲惨的一生。歌中描述玛丽莲梦露虽然贵为好莱坞的超级巨星，却沦为当时权贵玩物（包括当时的美国总统约翰甘乃迪 ），完全没有自我，终日与寂寞为伴。甚至当她自杀身亡，媒体依然不放过她，将她裸体陈尸于自宅的情景，钜细靡遗的报导出来。歌词中多次出现的Norma Jean，就是玛丽莲梦露的本名。
这首歌虽问世于70年代，但艾尔顿强在1987年末，将他在澳洲举行的演唱会实况录音发行成CD，并将这首歌的演唱会版本重新推出单曲，意外的，这支单曲很快就升到全美单曲排行前10名，隔年的葛莱美音乐奖提名名单公布，他因为这首歌而获得"年度最佳单曲"、"最佳男歌手"的提名。或许是80年代玛丹娜刚出道时，曾刻意模仿玛丽莲梦露，再次唤醒了人们对这位银幕上永远的性感女神的记忆，而使这首歌再次大受欢迎，这对艾尔顿强或已故的玛丽莲梦露而言，都别具意义。
