老鼠和人的计划
我国有一句古话:“智者千虑,必有一失。”智者千虑订出的计划,英文可以叫做the best-laid schemes of mice and men(老鼠和人所订最周详的计划)。到底周详的计划跟老鼠有甚么关系呢? 原来这成语出自苏格兰诗人朋思(Robert Burns,1759-96)的《致老鼠》(To a Mouse)诗。诗人说老鼠的冬窝毁了在农夫犁下,又说:But,Mousie,thou are no thy lane/In proving foresight may be vein:/The best-laid schemes o'mice and men/Gang aft agley.(但是,老鼠啊,证明深谋远虑可能只是白费气力的,不只是你。老鼠和人所订最周详的计划,都往往出错。 现有,人们就用the best-laid schemes of mice and men gang aft agley(或oft go astray)来说最周详的计划也会出错,例如:Well,the best-laid schemes of mice and men oft go astray.The school athletic meet has to be postponed because of the typhoon.(嗯,人有千算,天教一算。台风一来,学校运动会就要延期了。) |
