Laws grind the poor, and rich men rule the law. Mankind censure injustice, fearing that they may be the victims of it and not because they shrink from commintting it. No society can make a perpetual constitution, or even a perpetual law. One of the most striking and salutary thing in Ameican life is the widespread study of law. Punishment is justice for the unjust. Really, what we want now, is not laws, against crime, but a law a -gainst insaity. Singularity is almost invariably a clue. The more featureless and commonplace a crime is , the more difficult is it to bring it home. The law cannot make all men equal, but they are all equal before the law. The laws of Nature, that is to say the laws of God, plainly made every human being a law unto himself, we must steadfastly refuse to obey those laws, and we must as steadfastly stand by the conventions which ignore them , since the statutes furnish us peace, fairly good government and stability, and therefore are better for us than the laws of God, which would soon plunge us into confusion and disorder and anarchy if we should adopt them. |
