A: Good morning, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Matthew. I trust you've had a good rest.

B& C: Yes, thank you.

A: I have come to make sure that your stay in Beijing is a pleasant one.

B: Why, thank you. You're going out of your way for us, I believe.

A: Not at all. After all, it's your first trip here and we'd like you to feel at home. If there's anything special you want, you can tell me. I'll try my best to help you.

B: Thank you. The room service here is quite good and we like the food here.

A: I'm very much glad you find the hotel service satisfactory.

B: Yes, I do.

A: By the way, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Matthew, I have a few things I'd like to talk over with you.

B: By all means.

A: It's just the matter of the schedule, that is, if it is convenient for you right now.

B: Why not? No better time than now.

A: I understand that Mr. Paul of your party has not arrived yet. When do you expect him?

B: Mr. Paul has booked his flight for the 28th. I think we can draw up a tentative plan now. If he wants to make any changes, minor alternations can be made then. Will that suit you?

A: That would be fine.

C: Well, Wilson. I'm sure Mr. Paul wouldn't mind two days of sightseeing as our hosts have taken all the trouble to arrange things.

B: Well, in that case…

C: Miss Huang, were you thinking of any particular place you wanted to take us to?

A: Well, we had the Summer Palace and Great Wall in mind.

C: Wondeful! I was told that the Summer Palace was the summer residence of the Empress Dewager. The Great Wall is the sign of the civilization of human beings. I've heard so much about them. How about them, Wilson?

B: Sure, I'm all for it now that you've got me interested. But is there any way of ensuring we'll have enough time for our talks?

A: Well, so long as we know what each other's requirements are and we don't get bogged down on details, I'm sure the talks will progress as planned.

C: Well, for our part, we'll do our best to make everything smooth sailing.

A: Thank you. If all goes well, we'll be able to wind up our talks on Friday this week.

B: I hope so. Anyway we'll do our best.

Dialogue B

(Miss Huang proceeds to discuss the arrangements of the following activities with Mr. Wilson and Mr. Matthew. )

(A: Miss Huang; B: Mr. Wilson; C: Mr. Matthew)

A: There are some minor details I'd like to say.

B: Yes?

A: We think you'd like to taste some Beijing Duck while you're in Beijing.

B: Oh, that would be great!

A: Then we'll have dinner together on the evening of the 28th, that is the evening of Mr. Paul's arrival. By the way, would you be interested in Beijing opera?

C: I wouldn't mind taking in some Beijing opera. Would you, Wilson?

B: No, I'd like to. But I hear it is difficult to understand.

A: Don't worry. I'll take care of that.

B: Thanks. So our evenings will be quite full then?

A: Oh, no. We'll leave some evenings free, that is, if it is all right with you.

B: Oh, sure, that's I wanted to suggest. We'd have to compare notes on what we've discussed during the day.

B: There is, if it can be arranged…

A: Yes?

C: We'd like to see a couple of your factories.

A: That can be easily arranged. Anything else?

B: But if it is not too much trouble, we would like to talk to some of the technicians, if this is possible.

A: That could be done when you visit the factories.

C: Good!

A: We'll take it, then, that the day after Mr. Paul arrives, we'll have a briefing session, so you'll know what we need and

we'll know what you have to offer. Will that do?

B: Sure. That'll put us both in the picture.

A: The day after that——should we continue with our talks or would you…

B: Look, could you arrange a visit to one of your factories on that day? Then we'd have some idea of what you'll be needing.

A: I can't say for certain off-hand. But I think it can be arranged for Mr. Paul to visit the Beijing Electronic Equipment Factory, which you and Mr. Matthew visit the Jinghua Electronic Equipment Factory in the afternoon, that is, if it's convenient for you.

B: That's a good idea! Better have something we can get our hands on rather than just spend all our time talking.

A: And after that we'll continue with our talk. You'll have some first hand knowledge of the situation by then.

B: Yes, it'll be easier for us to get down to facts then. We'll be having talks for a couple of days! I think, there're a lot of thing to go over.

A: We thought you might like to see the sights of Beijing between talks.

B: Thanks, maybe later. Let's get business over first.

A: Well, we had thought a sightseeing trip between talks would be a welcome diversion. Business can be combined with pleasure, you know.

B: Of course. I'd appreciate it, if you'll arrange it.

A: All right. Then I believe that's settled.

B: By the way, Miss Huang, can you recommend a good restaurant? We'd like to give a dinner for you, too.

A: Thank you, When the time comes, I'll make the necessary reservations for you.

B: Thanks.

C: And would you please see that our plane tickets are booked for the next Thursday, the day after we wind up our talks.

A: Sure! But wouldn't you like to spend an extra day or two here?

B: I'm afraid that won't be possible, much as we'd like to. You see, we've got to report back to the head office.

A: Oh, I see. Maybe some other time then.

B: We're sure we'll be in and out of Beijing pretty often in the future.

C: Then it's all settled, Miss Huang. Thank you for your cooperation. I'm sure the talks will go well. We've arranged our schedule without any trouble.

A: Good morning, Mr. Schurz. We are very glad you could come.

B: Thank you, Miss Li. We are pleased to have the opportunity to visit your company.

A: Mr. Schurz, we have arranged for you and your friends to have dinner with our manager, Mr. Sun at twelve o'clock today.

B: Good.

A: Here is a copy of itinerary we have worked out for you and your friends. Would you please have a look at it?

B: That's OK.

A: If you have any questions on the details, feel free to ask.

B: (After reading the itinerary) Oh, it's a very good one. I can see you have put a lot of time into it.

A: Thank you. We really wish you'll have a pleased stay here.

B: By the way, Miss Li. I wonder if it is possible to arrange shopping for us.

A: Yes, of course. I'm wondering what time would be most convenient for you.

B: How about the day before the end of our visit?

A: OK. I'll arrange the shopping in the schedule.

B: It's very kind of you.
