About the Salary

Interviewer：First of all, thank you for accepting this job.

David：It's my pleasure.

Interviewer：What are your salary expectations?

David：Would you please tell me about your pay scale first?

Interviewer： We'll offer you a monthly salary to begin with ❶ . In addition ❷ , we offer 1%

commission on all your sales. You'll also enjoy life insurance and health insurance. What starting

salary would you expect here?

David：Based on my skills and experience, I'd like to start at 4,000 yuan a month.

Interviewer：That sounds reasonable.

David：Do I have paid vacation?

Interviewer：Yes, you'll have two weeks' paid vacation a year. And you'll get an additional

week after 4 years, and then again after 9 years if you decide to stay that long. We promote from

within based on performance, so there is an excellent chance that you could become a sales

manager, or even a regional manager.

❶ “to begin with”有三个含义：一、在口语中用来引出想说明的首要的、最重

要的观点，可译为“首先”，例如：Well, to begin with, he shouldn't even have

been driving my car.（嗯，首先，他根本就不应该开我的车。）二、用来说

明在另外一件事情发生之前某物已经处于某种状况了，可译为“之前，原

先”，例如：I didn't break it! It was like that to begin with.（我没有打碎它！它

之前就是这个样子。）三、表示在某个过程或活动的第一个阶段，可译

为“刚开始（的阶段），起初（的时候）”，如文中用法。

❷ “in addition”表示“另外（还），此外（还）”，例如：In addition, they eat a

great deal of fruit .（此外，他们还吃大量的水果。）
