Liverpool shreds PSV 3-0, Sun plays substitute
EINDHOVEN - Sun Xiang from China joined his Dutch team of PSV Eindhoven into battle against Liverpool at the start of the second half of the European Champions League quarterfinal held here Tuesday evening.
Liverpool achieved its lead over PSV at around the 27th minute when Jamie Gerrard made the score. The England midfielder drove into the box to plant a header from a Steve Finnan cross into the far corner, giving PSV's goalkeper Heurelho Gomes no chance. Jefferson Farfan, PSV's leading scorer with 17 goals this season, came off at halftime and was replaced by China defender Sun Xiang, who played the left midfielder. It was the first change of players in the field. John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch then scored for Liverpool, which won its fifth European Cup two seasons ago. PSV, the 1988 European Cup champion, has not won a match since defender Alex injured his hamstring on March 11 against Excelsior Rotterdam. Liverpool also started with an away win in the previous round, beating last year's champion FC Barcelona 2-1. The English team then advanced to the quarterfinals on away goals despite a 1-0 loss at home in the second leg |
